Photography workshops for curious minds

image

The Art of Seeing Academy is a registered New Zealand charity dedicated to helping young people aged 8-18 discover the power of photography. Our workshops support children of all abilities, including those on the autism spectrum and with ADHD, using photography as a creative tool for expression and connection. While some of our nature-based sessions are funded by local councils, most of our work with neurodiverse children relies on community support. If you’re able to help a child join a workshop or donate a spare camera, we’d be truly grateful — every bit makes a difference.

FAQ

‣
Why do you require DSLR cameras?

The journey of learning photography is filled with trial and error, and using basic point-and-shoot cameras might not always yield the results kids hope for, leading to potential discouragement. This is something we aim to avoid at all costs.

When children see the image they envisioned captured exactly as they wanted, the joy in their eyes is unforgettable. This moment of achievement is crucial - it not only lights up their world but also serves as a significant boost to their self-confidence.

‣
Do you provide free cameras for the workshop?

At the moment we have eight spare cameras we can lend to kids during the workshop, allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. If you would like to help us with covering camera costs, please use this form.

‣
What happens after the workshop

At the end of each workshop we copy photographs from your kids cameras and then load the most interesting ones to the website, in our gallery, feature them in our journal and in the articles, as well as keep them for future exhibitions. If you would rather not have your child’s photos featured, please let us know in advance.
